“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

In the last few posts we have been focusing a lot on be still, but in this post I will be focusing on the other half of the verse: know that I am God.

The whole point of quiet time is getting to know God. If we are too busy talking and moaning and demanding and asking, but do not take some time to quiet down and wait on God, we will never give God a chance to actually talk and show us great and marvellous things. Just like any normal relationship, both people need an opportunity to talk and share and respond. Learn to listen and hear, to see and understand.

Get to know God and get to know who He is. Let Him guide you and teach you through scripture.

Who-Do-You-Say-that-I-Am

He (Jesus Christ) said to them, “Who do you say I am?” Matthew 16:15

Will you be able to answer this very simple question if someone had to ask you, “Who do you say God is?” Get to know God, spend quiet time with him.

One of my most favourite Bible stories explains the importance of getting to know God. You may have heard it in Sunday school as a child and/or teenager. This passage of scripture is very powerful and very true:

Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.

For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept.

But at midnight there was a cry, “Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.”

Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, “Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.” But the wise answered saying, “Since their will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.”

And while they going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also saying, “Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered, “Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.”

Matthew 25:1-12

We have to be careful that we don’t become passive and avoid quiet time. Do not get so busy doing many amazing religious activities that you forget to spend time with God and getting know him. Get to know and recognise God’s voice.

“My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”

John 10:27, 5

In your pursuit of God and learning to know who God is and what his voice sounds like, who will along the way find and form your identity in God. You will get to know yourself and grow and become the person God created you to be.

As you go on this journey to become still and know God, I hope and pray that you will find yourself in God and that your identity as a person will be strengthen and healed in the presence of God.
